NATURE

THE HERON
WAITS

Its movements are careful.

Along the shallow waters of the Kamo river in Kyoto, the heron stalks the water looking for dinner. Around him the noise of the city on a Saturday evening—the rumble of busses and cars, the rattle of bicycles, the chatter of locals and tourists alike navigating the streets. But none of that matters to the grey heron, alone in the water, watching, waiting.

NATURE

FLY WITH ME

The turtle and remora are best friends.

They fly through the water in perfect sync. As the turtle dives for the sea grass, the remora fish follows. When the turtle rises to the surface for air, the remora is there for the journey. I watched these two for 40 minutes, observing how they moved through the waters at Spotts beach. They separated for 15 minutes, and I followed the fish, wondering what it would do next. Sure enough, it found its way back to its turtle companion and they resumed their journey.

NATURE

THE EXILE

A lone stallion.

In the bone-dry valley of Roberts Mountains of Nevada, herds of wild horses travel. All except for this one stallion. Driven from his herd, he wanders the cheat-grass laden lands on his own. Perhaps he seeks a new home, a mate to start his own herd. Perhaps he enjoys the freedom. All I know is that we watched each other, and he dared me to challenge him. I politely declined.
